A deep-seated division has emerged among northern leaders regarding President Bola Tinubu's potential re-election bid in 2027. While some core northern groups are determined to oust Tinubu, minority groups from the region are throwing their weight behind the President, according to Punch Newspaper.
The Middle Belt Forum, a prominent northern minority group, has declared its support for a southern presidency in 2027. According to the group's spokesman, Luka Binniyat, the Middle Belt has received more political appointments and infrastructural projects under Tinubu's administration than under the previous government.
Similarly, indigenous Hausa Christians of Northern Nigeria have dissociated themselves from the plot to remove Tinubu in 2027. The group's National Chairman, Daniel Musa, stated that Tinubu's administration has demonstrated a commitment to addressing the insecurity that has plagued many northern states.
On the other hand, core northern groups, including the Arewa Consultative Forum and the League of Northern Democrats, have vowed to support an alternative candidate in 2027. The groups cited Tinubu's perceived unfavourable disposition towards the region and the government's handling of the economy as reasons for their opposition.
The division among northern leaders has sparked intense debate, with some arguing that Tinubu's re-election bid is doomed, while others believe that the President can still win over the region with improved performance.
