Nigerian security authorities have reportedly detained 42 military officers, including 16 senior personnel, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
According to emerging reports, the planned attack was slated for October 25, 2025, but was uncovered weeks in advance through intercepted communications and funding trails. Investigators have allegedly linked the plot’s financial backing to former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, whose residence has since been searched by security operatives.
Those arrested include Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq, Colonel M.A. Ma’aji, Lieutenant Colonel S. Bappah, Lieutenant Colonel A.A. Hayatu, Lieutenant Colonel P. Dangnap, Lieutenant Colonel M. Almakura, Major A.J. Ibrahim, Major M.M. Jiddah, Major M.A. Usman, Major D. Yusuf, Captain Ibrahim Bello, Captain A.A. Yusuf, Lieutenant S.S. Felix, Lieutenant Commander D.B. Abdullahi, and Squadron Leader S.B. Adamu, among others.
The Defence Headquarters has denied that the arrests are related to a coup attempt, describing them instead as “disciplinary actions” within the armed forces. However, multiple security sources suggest that the scale of the detentions and the sensitivity of the accused officers’ ranks point to a deeper internal investigation.
The development follows recent military reshuffles ordered by the Presidency, raising speculation of growing unease within sections of the armed forces.
As of press time, the government has not issued an official statement beyond confirming that investigations are ongoing.
