A viral video circulating on social media shows an unidentified Nigerian pastor predicting that Opay, one of the country’s leading fintech companies, will allegedly collapse between December 2025 and January 2026, claiming users’ funds will mysteriously disappear due to “fabricated system glitches.”
In the clip, which has gathered over 4,400 engagements on X (formerly Twitter) since early Monday, the preacher warns, “Opay is about to close down. Opay is a ritual. Everybody will wake up one day to find their money gone.”
The prophecy has stirred widespread reactions online — with some users rushing to withdraw funds out of fear, while others dismissed the statement as attention-seeking or misinformation. A section of the public has also urged Opay to take legal action for defamation, citing the company’s strong operational record and compliance with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) licensing requirements.
Despite the controversy, Opay has not issued an official response. The company, which recently received multiple awards for innovation and customer growth, continues to process transactions normally.
The incident highlights ongoing public skepticism toward digital banking platforms in Nigeria, where unverified prophecies and online rumors often trigger financial panic.
