Manchester United are reportedly exploring options to strengthen their goalkeeping department, with Napoli's Alex Meret and Sunderland's Anthony Patterson emerging as potential targets, according to Metro UK.

The Red Devils are facing uncertainty over their current back-up goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, who is rumored to be seeking more playing time. This development has prompted Manchester United to consider alternative options, with Meret and Patterson being closely monitored.

According to transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United are interested in signing Meret on a free transfer when his contract with Napoli expires at the end of the season. However, the Red Devils will face competition from Inter Milan, who are also keen on securing Meret's services.

Patterson, valued at £20m, is another option being considered by Manchester United. The Sunderland goalkeeper has been impressive this season, helping his team to fourth place in the Championship. Tottenham are also reportedly interested in Patterson, which could spark a bidding war.

If Manchester United succeed in signing either Meret or Patterson, it could have significant implications for their goalkeeping department. The arrival of a new goalkeeper could provide competition for current first-choice goalkeeper, Andre Onana.

Manchester United's interest in Meret and Patterson highlights their desire to strengthen their goalkeeping options. With the January transfer window approaching, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will make a move for either of these talented goalkeepers.
